Day 1
You'll leave Cusco in the early morning to the small village of Cachora.
With the Salkantay massif in front, on the other side of the canyon, you
will head along the edge of the Apurímac canyon, with the river
almost 2000 metres below you. About half-way through the day you'll begin
your descent to the river. You will camp at the river’s edge that night.
Day 2
Today you will make the steep 1800 metre ascent up to the ruins of Choquequirao.
you will get a first glimpse of the citadel. Another two hours walk will
lead you to the destination. Here you will have the rest of the day to
relax, explore the ruins and, hopefully, see some condors, rising up on
the afternoon thermals. That night you will camp close to the ruins.
Day 3
On the third day you bid farewell to Choquequirao and begin your descent
to the Apurímac river before you begin the climb to Cachora. You
will camp for the night besides the river on a small glade of trees.
Day 4
This day you will also start early to avoid the worst heat in the canyon.
You will arrive in Cachora around lunchtime, where transportation will
be waiting for you to take you back to Cusco.
