Day 1
You will departure by bus to Mollepata at 2800 meters altitute. From
Mollepata you will walk about 6 hours through traditional Andean communities
like Cruzpata and Challacancha to Soraypampa at an altitute of 3800 meters.
Here you will camp.
Day 2
This day you will walk for about 7 hours total, 4 hours uphill to start
the ascent to the pass (4400 meters). Here you will have your first view
of the Salkantay mountain, a snow capped mountain with an altitute of
6271 meters. After some 3 hours walking with views of the Humantay and
Huayanay mountains you'll arrive at the camp site in Lluscamayu.
Day 3
This day you wil mainly walk downhill. This area is called ceja
de selva, the eyebrows of the jungle. Here coffee, coca and fruits
plantations can be observed. After a 7 hour walk, split up by a lunch,
you'll arrive at the last campsite in Llactapata. This is a newly discovered
Inca site, which is famous for a “condor eye” view of Machu Picchu.
Day 4
After a short hike you will arrive to the hydroelectric trainstation
on the Urubamba river. Here you will take the train to Aguas Calientes,
a little town at the foot of Machu Picchu. You will stay there in the
hostal Viajeros.
Day 5
In the morning you will take the bus up to Machu Picchu and receive
a guided tour for about 3 hours and have plenty of free time to explore
more. Options are to climb the mountain Huayna Picchu, Temple of the Moon,
or the Gate of the Sun. At approximately 16:00 you'll return by train
to Cusco arriving there around 21:00
